History of the Wauregan Apartments

uilt in 1855 in the Italianate style, The Wauregan was the finest hotel between New York and Boston. Abraham Lincoln and Gypsy Rose Lee are just a few of the famous people known to have taken a room at The Wauregan. The building was a fashionable residence for downtown businessmen, attorneys and other well-to-do residents. After construction of the Clarenden Annex in 1894, the 2nd floor ballroom became a focal point of community gatherings, reunions, weddings and civic celebrations.

The Wauregan was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 as part of the Downtown Norwich Historic District. Redevelopment of the building has been done in accordance with the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Historic Preservation.
